Conditions report for Spring Break Wednesday, March 26, 2025
Operating Hours: 9 AM to 9 PM

Good morning Hoodoo friends! We’ve got another harbinger of spring headed your way today in the form of a chance of thunderstorms. In fact, the National Weather Service (NWS) is reporting that some of those thunderstorms may be severe. NWS defines a severe thunderstorm as “a thunderstorm that produces a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph (50knots), and/or hail at least 1" in diameter.” The weather that is rolling in today will be the beginning of the next round of snow but not before we see a little bit of good old liquid precipitation. Fortunately we should only see one quarter to one half inch of rain unless we happen to get hit with one of those thunderstorms.

While we are on the topic of thunderstorms, please note that in the event of lightning in close proximity to Hoodoo we will shut down operation of our lifts until the storm has passed. We don’t want to cut into your fun but we also think that hanging you from a metal cable in a metal chair in high winds and lightning just seems like a bad idea. We will happily restart our lifts once the danger has passed.

Groomed ski surfaces are power-tilled today and will likely follow the classic spring cycle. Look for surfaces to be somewhat firm in the morning, to soften up as the day warms up, and to firm back up going into the evening.

The snow has gotten less light and fluffy but we are still sitting on just over a 10 foot base and that means the tree wells are at least 10 feet deep. As we were tragically reminded at a nearby resort recently, falling into tree wells and other terrain traps when there is deep, loose snow can lead to death by suffocation, especially if trapped upside-down. Please make sure you understand the danger of tree wells and other terrain traps and use extreme caution or avoid tree areas completely when the snow gets deep. If you are going to venture into the trees in deep snow make sure you have a solid riding partner, keep each other in sight, and have the knowledge you need to give yourselves your best chance if something happens. Snow immersion suffocation is a serious hazard. Learn the basics of how to keep yourself safe at deepsnowsafety.org.
