conditions report and trail status

Conditions report for Friday, December 13, 2024
Operating hours: 9 AM to 4 PM

Being something of a power hound myself and living with a little lingering sadness over last winter’s late start, I have found myself praying rather fervently for snow since some time in June. I might even have started a little before that if those who love summer didn’t find it so very offensive, so I try to at least wait until the Summer solstice. As we worked our way into a rather miraculous Thanksgiving weekend start here at Hoodoo those prayers picked up a little as our base depth slowly crept down. Today, I am happy to report that those prayers are about to be answered. Of course, every good snow storm (cold front) is preceded by a warm front and today looks to be our warm front day. With a high of 34°, moderate winds, and a quarter to a half inch of precipitation set to fall it is likely to be a bit damp our there today. The good news is we are still supposed to pick up 1 to 3 inches of snow today and then once it turns around 10 PM or so this snowstorm is on until at least next Sunday.

We are thrilled to be open and even happier to get to provide you with fun but please remember it is still early in the season and our base is still relatively shallow. Please keep an eye out for trail closure signs, marked and unmarked obstacles, and remember that certain trails and shortcuts only exist when there is sufficient snow to support them. There are likely to be some rocks and sticks and things peeking through the snow as well so it’s always a good idea to scout before you send it.

The next couple snowstorms are on their way! Do you know about the dangers deep tree wells pose? Ever wondered why you should have a riding partner on a powder day? Please check out deepsnowsafety.org to learn the basics. Skiing and snowboarding are inherently dangerous activities. Know before you go and find out how to give yourself and your riding buddies the best chance you can.

Base: 32 inches
New Snow: About an inch of new snow since yesterday.

Forecast as of 5 AM (Most recent NOAA spot weather here.)
Snow before 11 AM, then rain and snow with moderate winds and a high of 34°.

Forecasted Snow: 1 to 3 inches today, 4 to 8 inches tonight.

Wind: Southwest, around 7 miles per hour.

Temperature
Overnight: Low of 26°
Today: High of 34°
Tonight: Low of 29°

Skiing surfaces: Ski surfaces are power-tilled today and should be soft and fun. The fresh snow we got the last couple days really helped get things rather velvety smooth. The will likely get a little slushy once the precipitation starts.
